“Swamped”- Original painting by MJ Seal. Acrylic on canvas, 36″ x 48″. C. 2025

This piece originated from the memory of a painting I saw years ago- or thought I saw. I thought it was called “Swamped” and it featured a figure -seemingly drowned- drooped over the side of a canoe in a cartoonish southern swamp. It was not Peter Doight’s ethereal painting- Which I do like- it looked vaguely like the figure with the red shirt in the center right. I’ve found no evidence of this painting on the internet- perhaps I imagined the whole thing.

Bacchus seated in a mass of frogs. Three muses (?) emerging from the spilled brains of a blue corpse- one of which is plucking a feather for her hat. Catfish devouring each other. Gators and Lilies and slithering snakes. Lots of birds and an apprehensive figure decides whether or not to take the plunge.

The image I had of that piece stuck in my head and fermented up there for quite awhile. When I decided to finally put brush to canvas it rapidly evolved into this very busy painting. There is a preponderance of the number 3 and birds- lots of birds. There are a lot what seem like symbols of death- and dark urges, temptations, triggers and itches.

The wave was a reference to Hokusai’s “Great Wave off Kanagawa” and “Green Wave”- which itself referenced “Great Wave” I think.
