Monad IV

close up detail of an original painting by MJ Seal that resembles a cross between an aerial view of a city at night and a bright orange and black deep sea creature

Something from the deep?

“Monad IV”- Original painting by MJ Seal. Acrylic on canvas, 27 1/2” x 19”. C. 2020

Or perhaps something seen from far above-

Reservoir or a dark eye in the anterior end?
Bridges and byways and perhaps a river

The starting point-

I thought this would turn into something dark and Stygian

I started painting in the details by following along with the original stains and crinkles in the very wrinkled canvas.

The halfway point-

It gradually transformed into what looks like a city seen from space.

After the under painting dried I went in with translucent glazes of golden yellow and earthy reds for that perfect streetlight orange-

City center
A vast network
A maw?

Have I mentioned I love that rusty orange color of sodium vapor lights? So warm and comforting. Anyway…
