Monad III

Close up detail of a colorful abstract painting on a scrap of drop cloth by MJ Seal that resembles some peculiar sea creature with numerous eyespots

Predator or prey?

“Monad III”- Original painting by MJ Seal. Acrylic on canvas, 26” x 16”. C. 2020

The starting point-

A very coarse drop cloth that had some interesting paint splatters. As I cut off the edges a fish like form developed.

The halfway point-

The coarse texture of the cloth prevented me from any fine detail work so the under painting took on a (relatively) simple zebra like pattern with what looks like eyespots- like you would see on butterfly wings or fish tails to confuse potential predators.

And after a few glazes of color-

For the coloring-in stage I started with the underlying paint stains that were left on the drop cloth and the rest of it just kind of fell into place
