Cella

Detail of a paper mache sculpture by MJ Seal that looks like a cross between a honeycomb filled with golden nuggets and some peculiar starfish or fungus with numerous tendrils reaching out

I think this is my opus-

“Cella”- Original sculpture by MJ Seal. Paper ephemera, old paintings, old rags, sackcloth, PVA glue, acrylic and 24kt gold leaf, 38” x 24” x 3”. C. 2020

What began as just a few hexagonal cells years ago has come along way-

I am very happy with the intricate fractal pattern that developed
Little tendrils of torn up sackcloth reach out from along the edges
It’s quite animated looking esp when viewed from the side. From this angle it looks like some peculiar starfish crawling towards you
Each cell is filled with nuggets of wadded up paper ephemera coated in gold leaf
