Autochthonous Life- New & Improved

In this Close up detail of an original painting by emerging artist MJ Seal a figure n a royal blue robe with a fox mask looks on as a gloved hand sprouting from a mass of tangled branches holds up a peculiar monocle that turns the face of what looks like the bust of some aristocratic early 19th century woman into a giant cartoonish eye. Behind her the head of an aged tree man opens to reveal another tangle of branches.

So when I finished this piece the first time I wasn’t really happy with the lower half- so I guess it wasn’t really finished- but it was in a show so I had to show it as is. Once back from the gallery it sat around for awhile bothering me and so – finally- I decided to start over on the lower section. There were several versions. Eventually it turned into a mass of branches and roots with a little open pocket inhabited by a lost explorer. A branch with a sparrow feeding a cuckoo chick developed in the lower right.
