Work In Progress- Jungle

Detail of an abstract painting in progress by MJ Seal

A few finishing touches and this should be ready to hang on the wall-

“Jungle”- Original painting by MJ Seal. Acrylic on canvas, 5’ x 3’. C. 2020.

The plain canvas – which I made from scratch including the stretchers- has been sitting around collecting dust for some time now- like maybe 5 years (?) (🙄) . So as part of my resolution to not procrastinate on projects I decided it was time to do something with it – or trash it.

First a painterly layer of spring green leftover from another project
Then I applied lots of different paints leftover from lots of earlier projects. I mashed rags and wax paper into the paint to create some interesting patterns as a starting point.
It quickly began to grow an inner world
Multiple faces and perhaps a bird on a twig developed in the left half.
A phantasmagoric mass started to grow at the heart of it
I glazed on several hues giving it an almost iridescent quality (hard to tell in the pics)- partially to tone down the creepiness- partially to give an effect similar to sunlight filtered through leaves in a forest. The ghostly entourage is almost camouflaged.

Hopefully I will be able to finish it over the weekend (🤞)

*Stay Tuned*
